HTC U 11 will be announced at a global event on May 16. The smartphone is rumoured to feature frame-embedded sensors for new type of input

HTC has already confirmed that its next flagship smartphone will arrive on May 16. The Taiwanese smartphone maker has sent out media invites for an event where it is expected to unveil the next U series smartphone.

While the smartphone was initially codenamed “Ocean,” a new VentureBeat report suggests it will launch as HTC U 11. HTC’s last flagship smartphone was HTC 10 and the company announced the U Ultra, an all new series in January this year. The HTC U 11 name is seen as an effort to “bridge past and present naming schemes.” Evan Blass adds that HTC U 11 will be announced in five different colour schemes including white, black, blue, red, and silver. It needs to be noted that these colour options will be restricted to certain regions.

The HTC U 11 is rumoured to feature a 5.5-inch WQHD display, Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB RAM and option for either 64 or 128GB storage. The smartphone is likely to feature a 12MP rear camera and a 16MP selfie shooter. The hightlight here is expected to be Edge Sense feature with frame-embedded sensors for gesture-based interaction. Blass says the handset will allow users to interact or control numerous functions like camera by “squeezing or swiping along its left and right edges.”

The Edge Sense feature is said to be baked into HTC’s Sense 9 skin based on Android 7.1 Nougat. It is not clear how the technology will work  and which apps will support these squeeze or swipe gestures.
